Today - December 2nd - is Giving Tuesday -- a global day dedicated to giving back! I didn't shop on Black Friday and I didn't order anything on Cyber Monday. And I am excited to be a Social Media Ambassador and spread the word. Because today I will happily donate a few dollars to organizations close to my heart. It doesn't take much to give - a few dollars, the cost of a midtown working moms lunch.
I donated a few dollars to the The Hawthorne Country Day School and I hope you will consider doing the same. The Hawthorne Foundation is a private, a not-for-profit organization that has, for over thirty years, provided an education to children who are challenged by serious disabilities. In 1981, The Margaret Chapman School (predecessor to Hawthorne Country Day School) became the first ABA (applied behavior analysis) based educational program to provide services to individuals who were diagnosed with severe developmental disabilities, autism and other behavior disorders. HCDS is the longest running and most successful ABA program in New York State. Over subsequent years, we have expanded our programs to include a full continuum of care for children -- birth to adult.
The HCDS is raising money for the expansion and renovation of a new swimming pool & community center project at Hawthorne Country Day School / Hawthorne Foundation Inc. in Westchester.
They are looking to raise more than $450,000.00 to make this dream a reality. As an autism mom, I know how important a school like Hawthorne is. Once completed, I know the swimming pool / community center will be a great resource for all children, adults and families.
If you'd like to make a donation - you may do so HERE.
But it's not always about giving money. There are many other ways you can give. Not just today but through out the year. Yes money helps but you can give your time, donate books or send an earring. Or you can give a visit to my blog amiga Diana [HERE] and she will donate a $1 for every comment she receives.
Here are a few other organizations that are dear to my heart.
Devin & Tristan Give Back is a nonprofit organization created by a family to inspire ordinary people to give back. They provide a unique service spotlighting causes close to people's hearts and offering outlets that will benefit those in need.
Dylan’s Wings of Change is a foundation established to honor the memory of Dylan Hockley, who was killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School on 12/14/12. The foundation’s focus is to help children with autism and other related conditions achieve their full potential.
The Bronxchester Challenger League is a ten session program to help children on the spectrum with sensory integration, and social engagement, through baseball. The program allows children, both girls and boys, regardless of their functioning level, to play baseball in a safe, and judgment free environment. This will be possible through the assistance of Buddies, who will assist the children, both on and off the field.
The Orphaned Earring is dedicated to giving new meaning and purpose to your lonely orphaned earrings. How it works:
1. Donate your orphaned earrings or unwanted jewelry
2. They find a home for the earring by beading it into a bracelet while recycling material
3. The bracelet gets sold and together we raise funds for orphans in Latin America
"We are aware that, at this moment, we cannot fulfill all the basic needs of all the children but we strongly believe every child at the orphanages deserve a fun childhood. With a little bit of attention, fun and lots of love, we bring arts & crafts to brighten their life, spark creative thinking and at least for a little while try to make their harsh life experiences seem like a distant memory."
