Atypical Familia: On Dreams and Self-Esteem: Lupita's Life Lessons

I don't typically watch any of the award shows. But this year, I've been following Lupita. Not only to see what she wears, but to hear what she says. And I watched The Oscars® simply because I wanted to see Lupita.

No question, Lupita looked flawless in her blue Prada gown. But it was her acceptance speech that moved me. Lupita's message was one that everyone needs to hear - especially young children.

It is the dream, that so often saves us. It is the ability to dream that keep us going. Dreams are not a privilege. It is our personal right.

And then yesterday, I came across a video of Lupita's speech at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon. And again, I was in tears. She spoke so candidly about her struggles with self-esteem and how she once "felt unbeautiful."

Young women are bombarded with main stream media's standard of beauty and Lupita's message on what it is to be beautiful, is critical.

March is Women's History Month and Lupita definitely made history as the first Kenyan to win an Oscar®. And I believe that she will continue make history. Her words and her presence will continue to inspire. Lupita is a female role model not only for young girls, but for us all.
